About us. Waveney Strings - Born in Beccles Many people live with the regret that they never learnt an instrument. Some had a few lessons at school and then gave up. There may be a violin in your attic waiting to be rediscovered. In Heyday Magazine, Bronwen Taylor from North London said she took up the viola at 45. She had played the piano and French horn at school but gave up. She then heard about the East London Late Starters Orchestra and hasn't looked back. "you sound awful when you start but as an adult you do it because you want to, not because your parents are forcing you". "Everyone plays together and the better players make it sound harmonious". Bronwen now plays in three amateur orchestras, plays regularly in small groups and even goes on music holidays -"They're some of the best holidays I've had". Netta Swallow was a member of the East London late Starters orchestra for several years when she lived in London. On moving to Beccles in 2007 she began to think about forming a string orchestra for mixed ability players. After some very positive publicity the first session of the Waveney Strings was held on Sunday 20 July 2008 at the King's Head in Beccles.

PROGRESS Since the
first session of Waveney Strings, we have enlisted the support of the
Blythe String Quartet as our resident conductors and support players.
We have played a wonderful range of music and had our first
concert in December 2008 in Beccles.
Some players have other musical talents and contributed pieces on
saxophone and keyboard. A
concert was held in Worlingham Church in July 2008 to support the
Wateraid charity and we are pleased to report that the church, albeit a
small one, was packed out !
Netta Swallow, who got the ensemble together with the help of Jaki Alden said, " a really good start in which we achieved our aim of getting a wide range of players together to make music in a supportive environment. The ensemble will provide an opportunity for people to learn and improve their string playing and, who knows, we may even manage a concert next year. For now we have to plan our structure for the future and hopefully recruit a few more members." Netta
WAVENEY RECORDERS Last autumn we set up a new group that meets after the String Orchestra rehearsal has finished. We discovered that many of our members had actually studied the recorder at school at a younger age and still enjoyed playing. A full article will appear in this space in the near future but, in the mean time, here are a few pictures.
