WAVENEY STRINGS

 ANNUAL REPORT 2009-2010

The Autumn term got off to rehearsals for our Christmas playthrough – the programme WAS to include music  from Peter Warlock, a tango from leslie Searle, Farewell to Stromness by Peter Maxwell Davies and others along with pieces from Waveney Recorders.  Unfortunately, bad weather meant it had to be called off.  Instead, those who could make it (about 17) assembled in my front room in January along with conductor Frankie Ayers – a bit of a squeeze in a small terraced house but great fun !

As a project for the Summer term, we applied for and got funding from the London 2012 Olympics Open Weekend and ran an “Open workshop” for local musicians.  Participating along with Waveney Strings were Waveney Recorders, led by Margaret Westlake, The River Hundred Folk Band and members of Lowestoft Orchestral society.  Our conductor was Martin Sussams.  Over 70 people attended this event with excellent feedback from participants.  During the workshop, we were joined by violist, Rosemary Shaw, who has subsequently joined us a support for the viola section when she is available.

On 1 August 2010, Netta, Zena, Nick, Sarah and Amanda played at a fund raising garden party in south Norfolk  and received a warm round of applause and kind words at the end of the event.

In September, several members attended the Beccles Festival playday led by members of the London Mozart Players.

During 2009-10, the orchestra has mostly been conducted by Debbie Whomes, cellist with the Blyth String Quartet but on occasion Frankie Ayers, Liz Skinner and Ursula Pank have deputised.

The Quaker Hall has been an excellent venue so we are very grateful to the wardens, Jill and Phil.

Our various donations and grants mean we are reasonably financially secure but we do need an average of about 18 members attending each session in order to cover our costs.  New members are always welcome.

Thank you everyone – Netta Swallow, Chair
