Waveney Strings has been set up to provide a friendly and supportive environment in which string players can improve their skills and, at the same time, enjoy making   music. A wide range of ability is accepted although some grounding would be useful. Ideal if you had lessons at school and the violin is collecting dust in the attic. There are opportunities for one to one tuition and the orchestra meets regularly on Sundays.  We aim to play any music that is reasonably accessible and has been arranged for string ensemble.  We also encourage people to get together informally in their own homes to play chamber music.

NEW:

Waveney Recorders

Waveney Strings now has an off-shoot.  After each rehearsal, by popular demand,  many of our members are joined by others to play recorder music.  If you play the recorder or perhaps had lessons at school, why not come along.  Its safety in numbers and a great sound.

Waveney Strings, Waveney Recorders, The Lowestoft Orchestral Society. River Hundred Folk band and the Hulver Penny Whistle Club – invite you to COME AND JOIN OUR OPEN REHEARSAL

We have got together as a result of funding from the 2012 London Olympics successfully awarded via Suffolk County Council.  We will be meeting up at the Quaker Hall, Smallgate, Beccles on Sunday 25 July, 3.15 pm.  Netta Swallow, founder member of Waveney Strings said “ we had to invent a challenge to the public in order to get the funding – so our challenge is that if you have not played an instrument for a long time or are learning to play – come along and join in.  For those a bit nervous of playing again, we will have some easy versions of music available for strings, recorders and also some basic folk songs.  Unfortunately, we cannot provide for all instruments but violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, whistle, recorder, guitar and bodhran drum players welcome”.

If you do not have a violin or viola, there will be some available to use on the day and which can be hired if you would like to continue with your learning at home.

Waveney Strings was founded in Beccles in 2008 and since then we have formed a new group Waveney Recorders, led by Margaret Westlake – an early music recorder specialist from Bungay.  Nick Pryke, from Lowestoft is the co-ordinator for the recorder group and says “I am really delighted with the response from people to come along and play recorder in Beccles.  The open event is a fantastic way to encourage people to play their instruments again or just come along to see what we play and meet other players”.  Waveney Strings will be rehearsing tango, baroque and early music and the Lowestoft Orchestral Society will be performing a new piece by composer and musician Martin Sussams.

The afternoon will be rounded off by the local Hulver based River Hundred Folk band and the Hulver Penny Whistle Club with a lively selection of folk songs and dance tunes. The 'River Hundred Folk Band' is a local ceilidh band consisting of fiddle, flute, penny whistle, guitar and bodhran. Most members are also in the ‘Hulver Penny Whistle Club’, which has been in existence for over three years and learns new tunes by ear – the traditional Irish way. Spare bodhrans and whistles will be available and sheet music for all the tunes. Flute, guitar and fiddle players would also be very welcome to join in.

So even if you just want to come and listen and have some tea and cake, please come along.  If you wish to play recorder or strings, please contact Netta Swallow on 01502 470135 or email netta.swallow@btinternet.com or if you prefer folk music, contact Jo Poole on 01502 710257 email jopoole6@btinternet.com
