About Us

Waveney Strings was set up by Netta Swallow in 2008. Her inspiration came from the East London Late Starters Orchestra, an organisation set up to enable players at all levels develop or re-hone their musical skills.

At Waveney Strings, players come together to support each other and gain experience of playing with others. We learn to play pieces of music chosen both for fun and to provide manageable challenges.

Whether rusty, relatively new to string-playing or more experienced, Waveney Strings provides a friendly environment in which to refresh, gain and increase skills, and to share ideas and experience.
Playing with others is always a wonderful mind expanding experience.

We welcome players of all kinds of string instrument of approximately Grade 3 standard or above (no exams necessary and there is no audition). If at first you find it difficult, don't worry, it will happen. Within a term or two you will be amazed what you can do!

Debs Whomes

Debs began playing cello aged 10 and went on to study music at University.

She currently works in marketing, manages the Blythe String Quartet, plays cello and keys as a pit musician for various theatre performances and orchestras and also works as Musical Director on a range of shows.

In her spare time (ahem!) she enjoys socialising, walking, cycling, nature, sloths, tap dancing and tea drinking.

It's quite true, she is always as cheerful as this:
